How painful is scalp micropigmentation?

People ask me this before every single appointment and I never quite know what to say. Not because I’m dodging it. Because the answer really does change that much person to person. I had a client snoring in my chair once, full on asleep, and then a week later someone described the exact same spot as razor blades on bone. Nothing changed on my end. Same everything.

The location matters a lot. Back of the head and sides, most people barely register it. Threes out of ten, sometimes lower. A few people have told me they were surprised how little they felt. But the top of the head is different and the forehead area is where things get hard.

I had one guy whose leg started twitching at his temples, completely involuntary, just nerves doing their thing. He felt bad about it but I see it more than people realize. The very front of the hairline, that strip along the forehead, is consistently where people hit their limit. Some go quiet. Some start narrating everything I’m doing. Both are fine. Something a handful of clients have mentioned is this vibration feeling, not pain exactly, more like a buzzing that goes into the skull. One woman called it a crawling feeling. It sounds uncomfortable and it kind of is but most people find it more strange than actually painful. Skull has no cushion, thin skin over hard bone, so sensation just travels right through.

Precautions

Numbing cream I’d say use it if you’re on the fence. I don’t push it because some people don’t want it and that’s fine. But the ones who skip it to be tough usually regret it. One client skipped it his second session after using it the first time. Called me. Was not pleased with the decision. Put it on about twenty minutes before and it takes a real edge off, not completely numb but noticeably different.

Recovery is almost a letdown after how much people stress about the session. Sunburn feeling for a day, little tender, most clients go back to work the morning after.
